Earlier this year, Dean McGowan and Cameron Terill were selected from a group of the WRFL's most promising young umpires by AFL Victoria to officiate the match between Geelong FL and Eastern FL at Simonds Stadium.
Dean was lucky enough to officiate the senior match that would decide the inaugural statewide champion, alongside peers from the Geelong and Ballarat leagues. While he enjoyed the notably higher standard of play, Dean was particularly impressed by the professional treatment the umpiring team received. "We were observed all game and had (former AFL umpiring coach) Steve Keating speak to us at both the major breaks. We were sat down at the end of the game and went through an excel spreadsheet with all of our decisions for the game, distinguishing whether they were either correct, incorrect, missed or unwarranted. The footage was also made available after the game so we could personally review all the decisions."
Cameron was in control of the Under 19s curtain raiser and was excited about the prospect of running on an AFL ground, describing it as an experience he will never forget. His main observation was how quickly he was able to gel with his fellow umpires. "I umpired the game with two other umpires I had never met before, and given our similar interests and umpiring experience we were able to work together effectively both on and off the field."
To celebrate their achievement, the pair sat down to contribute to In Profile! You can read more about them at the following links:
